R Madhavan is considered one of the most versatile actors in the Indian film industry and his films include Alaipayuthey, Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein and most recently The Rocketery, Dhurandhar. But unlike many whose rise to stardom is defined by years of rejection and struggle, his journey was shaped by unwavering self-belief and the courage to dream big. Long before movies became a part of his life, the actor wrote about his biggest ambition as a teenager – to be “rich and famous.” Madhavan recalls writing down his life goals when he was in 12th grade. “When I was in grade 12 in Canada, I wrote in my ambitions that I wanted to be versatile and a master in certain fields. I wrote this sentence when I was 17 years old. It still exists in my notebook. I wrote that I wanted to be a rich and famous actor, versatile and a master in certain fields. Those are actually the words that I wrote.” With Chetan Bhagat, Reflecting on the power of ambition, Madhavan said one should never limit one’s dreams, even if those dreams seem impossible to others. He sees his journey as proof that believing in the unimaginable can sometimes turn it into reality.“There are no limits to dreams, and you shouldn’t limit them. I always say, ‘Be a fool. See incredible dreams. Dreams that make other people think you’re crazy.’ It’s so important to dream big. I never thought one day Amitabh Bachchan Will wish me on my birthday. This is a big deal. He is a legend. Just look at my journey. There was a time when I was far away in Jamshedpur watching his films, and later I stood with him and made films with him. I embody this and I know it will happen one day. You should never be afraid of dreaming,” he added.Interestingly, although Madhavan wrote about his desire to become an actor, he never consciously committed himself to a film career. At the time, he was living a successful life as a public speaking and communication skills trainer, earning a good income and enjoying the life he had built for himself. Acting came into his life purely by chance.“My aim was not to become an actor. I had no idea that one day I would become an actor. I came to Mumbai to teach communication skills and public speaking. At that time I was earning between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 per month. It was a lot of money in those days and I used to spend it. Around the same time, someone randomly approached me on the street and asked me if I wanted to act. Initially, I thought it was a scam. But that’s how I got into show business,” he recalls.This unexpected encounter changed the trajectory of his life. Soon after, Madhavan played the lead role manilanan’s Alaipayuthey (2000), a romantic drama that was both a critical and commercial success. The film catapulted him to fame and paved the way for an illustrious career in the Tamil, Hindi and Telugu film industry.
