In an interview with the BBC, Serkis opened up about his casting choices for the new “Lord of the Rings” and defended his choice of an all-white cast. The actor praised the original author of the series, commenting: “Tolkien himself was very influenced by Norse mythology; there’s a lot of that. The Shire feels very, very much like a very, very white people, you know… they don’t really care about what’s going on outside the borders of the Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in.“

He further admitted that while he was aware of the ongoing debate and the backlash online, he didn’t want to care. He added, “Yes, there’s been some criticism. This particular movie acknowledges that to some extent. But I don’t think we’re going to make a politically correct version of a movie with casting just for the sake of casting and ticking boxes. The trio took to their social media accounts to share photos of themselves wearing white T-shirts featuring Middle-earth creatures of various skin tones.They also released a statement online, which read: “Tolkien created a world that was by definition multicultural. In this world, free people of different races and cultures unite and unite to defeat the forces of evil. Circle of Power reflects this. Our world is never all white, fantasy is never all white, and Middle-earth is never all white. “

Cast members announced and confirmed so far include Jamie Dornan, Anna Taylor-Joy, Kate Winslet, Lee Pace, Leo Woodall, Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen.
