There were scuffles, heated arguments and even an apparent shock by the throat as tempers flared between the players.The bad blood carried into the trophy ceremony, where several Argentina players turned their backs as Spain celebrated with the World Cup trophy. After collecting their silver medals from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump, Argentina’s players refused to watch Spain’s party.Instead, they stood facing their supporters with their backs to the podium as Spain collected their gold medals and lifted the World Cup trophy.The video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
Scuff, throat and heated discussions
The trophy ceremony followed chaotic scenes on the pitch moments after Spain sealed victory.Video footage showed Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes appearing to push Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat during a heated clash.When Spanish substitute Gavi stepped in to separate the players, Paredes appeared to push him to the ground.Spain captain Rodri also appeared to be punched in the stomach by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina before Molina and Nicolas Otamendi confronted the midfielder during a tense verbal exchange.Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and several players rushed to calm the situation before it escalated.
FIFA is opening an investigation
After the ugly scenes, FIFA confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the incidents.In a statement, FIFA said its “disciplinary committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethical Prosecutor to investigate potential violations of the (FIFA disciplinary code) regarding post-match incidents.”
