India’s weightlifting contingent added another Commonwealth Games medal on Sunday as Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the women’s 53kg final.It was India’s fourth weightlifting medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (women’s 48kg – gold), Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg – silver) and Muthupandi Raja (men’s 65kg – silver) had also finished on the podium in their respective categories. Weightlifting includes two disciplines – the snatch and the clean and jerk – with each lifter getting three attempts in both.In the snatch, athletes lift the barbell from the ground up in one continuous motion with a wide grip. In the clean and jerk, first they raise the bar to their shoulders (clean), pause, and then drive it over (jerk), holding it still until the buzzer.Gyaneshwari lifted 88 kg in the snatch to finish second. Nigerian Onome Didih led the field with 93 kg, while Canadian Groulx was third with 83 kg.The ranking after the snatch:

In the clean, Gyaneshwari reached 111 kg. However, Didih managed 113 kg to keep his lead and secure the gold medal, leaving the Indian lifter with the silver.The 23-year-old from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh totaled 199kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk) but Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih stole the show with a stunning 206kg (93kg + 113kg), rewriting both the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games gold records.It is the fourth weightlifting medal for India at the CWG and the fifth medal overall.
