Garam Masala (2005), starring Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Paresh Rawal was a huge commercial success and still has a huge fan following. Akshay, known for his light comic timing, is joined by John, who had mostly played serious roles before this film. Akshay had earlier revealed in an interview that John was visibly nervous during the initial days of shooting and almost decided to abandon the project.
John Abraham asked priyadarshan make him disappear from the movie
In a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, he shared, “It was his first or second day. He was doing a comedy, but because of the way he shot it, it was difficult to do comedy in front of Priyadarshan. John was sweating profusely. He told me he couldn’t do the film. He even went to Priyadarshan and asked, ‘Can you get me out of the film? I don’t want to do it.'” Priyan asked what happened and he replied that it was too fast, everything was going too fast and there was no time to breathe.“
John Abraham willing to refund fees and quit film
At one point, John was even willing to refund his fees and quit the film, but things took a turn when filmmaker Priyadarshan stepped in, reassured him and encouraged him to work at his comfortable pace. “And he actually couldn’t do it. Then, Priyan took him to his room, calmed him down and said he could do it at his own pace. Otherwise, he was ready to refund the money and leave the film, and he just couldn’t do it.” It’s confusing that one person can’t accomplish everything so quickly. You can’t shoot four scenes today and expect the climax the next day,” recalls Akshay.
Priyadarshan denies rumors of cutting John Abraham scenes
There were also rumors earlier that Akshay’s scenes with co-star John were cut from the hit film. Filmmaker Priyadarshan put those rumors to rest in an interview with Rediff in 2005, saying: “Am I an idiot for letting one of my actors make a film for me? It’s nothing more than a figment of the imagination of a troubled journalist.” Might be someone’s promotional idea, not mine. I’ve been in the business too long to let actors dictate to me. Akshay never showed the slightest intention of invading John’s territory. I actually keep in touch with John. Not once did he express any dissatisfaction with Akshay.
