Canada’s extraordinary journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on home soil as Morocco produced a ruthless second-half performance to claim a 3-0 victory in the first-16 clash at Houston Stadium on July 4. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time third as the Atlas Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of France and Paraguay. The final scoreline did not fully reflect how contested the opening hour had been. Canada started with more urgency and carried much of the early attacking threat, but Morocco combined defensive discipline with clinical finishing to punish any lapses after the interval. The contest was also shaped by its physicality, with six yellow cards shown before half-time alone as tempers repeatedly threatened to boil over.

Canada’s initial pressure meets Moroccan resistance

Jesse Marsch’s side opened aggressively, pressing high and forcing Morocco into their own half. Canada won an astonishing 11 corners compared to Morocco’s solitary corner throughout the match and looked the more dangerous side during the opening exchanges, despite finishing with just three shots on target from 10 attempts. The first warning came in the sixth minute when Richie Laryea broke down the left before cutting the ball back for Jonathan David, whose effort from a tight angle was palmed away by Yassine Bounou. Moments later, Tani Oluwaseyi broke away from his marker inside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike that Bono again reacted brilliantly to stop, preserving the deadlock.

Although Canada enjoyed those early moments, Morocco slowly wrestled control through longer periods of possession. Mohamed Ouahbi’s side finished with 56 percent of the ball, completed 340 of their 399 passes for an impressive 85 percent accuracy, and gradually slowed down the frantic pace Canada had been trying to impose. The co-hosts completed 273 of 347 passes at 78 per cent accuracy but found it increasingly difficult to break down Morocco’s organized defensive shape.

Six first-half bookings set the tone before Morocco hit back after the restart

As Canada’s attacks became more frustrated, the match became more and more combative. Referee Michael Oliver was forced into repeated disciplinary action as robust challenges flew from both sides.Redouane Halhal became the first Moroccan player in the 19th minute before Morocco suffered an early setback when Ismael Saibari was forced off with a knee injury just two minutes later, with Soufiane Rahimi replacing him. The physical battle intensified as Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea were both booked after a heated clash in the 39th minute. Jonathan David followed in the referee’s book three minutes later for a tactical foul, while Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss also received yellow cards before the break, leaving six players booked before half-time in one of the most fiercely contested opening periods of the tournament.

Canada continued to fight after the restart, but another reserve came almost immediately when Luc de Fougerolles brought down his opponent outside the box in the 48th minute. Morocco punished the mistake seconds later with a brilliantly attempted set-piece.

Rather than shoot straight from the free-kick, captain Achraf Hakimi disguised his intentions by firing a perfectly weighted pass to the edge of the penalty area. Ounahi timed his run to perfection, meeting the ball first-time and curling a right-footed effort through a crowd of players before nestling into the bottom-right corner beyond the full diving Maxime Crépeau in the 49th minute.

The clinical finish settles the contest

The opening goal completely changed the tactical picture. Canada was now forced to commit a greater number forward in search of an equalizer, allowing Morocco to exploit the spaces left.Marsch introduced Cyle Larin in a bid to inject fresh attacking energy, although the substitute quickly found himself in the referee’s book after an excessive challenge in the 66th minute.Despite finishing with just five total shots all afternoon, Morocco showed extraordinary efficiency. Four of those efforts tried Crépeau and three ended up in the back of the net.His second goal came in the 81st minute on a devastating counter-attack. Brahim Díaz drove purposefully through midfield before flicking a clever ball across the path of Ounahi. The midfielder kept his composure, took the pass in stride and drove a controlled finish past Crépeau to complete his brace and effectively end Canada’s hopes.

With the hosts committing almost all the players of the forward field during stoppage time, Morocco fought back one last time. Díaz turned provider, releasing Rahimi behind the stretched Canadian defense in the 90th minute + 7. The substitute broke free before calmly slotting his finish past the advancing goalkeeper to complete a 3-0 victory.

Morocco advances when Canada’s dream ends

The statistics perfectly illustrate the contrasting approaches. Canada attempted twice as many shots, won 11 corners to Morocco’s and pressed relentlessly during long periods of the contest. However, Morocco’s superior game management was ultimately decisive. They controlled possession, passed with more precision, committed only 14 fouls compared to Canada’s 23, and converted three of their four shots on goal into goals.

Ounahi deservedly emerged as the star performer after his clinical second half, while Hakimi dictated proceedings from right-back and provided the cleverly disguised assist for the breakthrough goal. Díaz transformed the final stages with two decisive assists after advancing in transition, while Bono’s first crucial saves ensured that Morocco resisted Canada’s strongest spell. The victory sends Morocco into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face France or Paraguay in Foxborough. For Canada, the defeat ends the best World Cup campaign in the nation’s history. Although their tournament ended in front of a home crowd, reaching the knockout rounds for the first time represents a landmark achievement that could prove a defining moment for Canadian soccer.
