Mental health expert Dr Kiran Chavan joins Maharashtra’s leading healthcare policy body

PUNE: The Maharashtra government has appointed Dr Kiran Prakash Chavan, founder of Manobrahma Foundation, director of Samvad Rehabilitation Center and expert in mental health and public health, as a member of the board of Maharashtra State Mental Health Authority.Dr. Chavan was appointed to a three-year term as an unofficial member representing individuals or organizations engaged in the care and support of people with mental illness.Speaking about his appointment, Dr Chavan said: “This appointment is not only an honor for me, but also a great responsibility to help build a stronger, more inclusive and person-centred mental health care system in the state. I remain committed to extending mental health services to the last mile and strengthening recovery services. “Over the past several years, Dr. Chavan has worked extensively in the areas of addiction recovery, psychiatric recovery, rehabilitation of homeless individuals with mental illness, mental health awareness and community mental health care, according to a press release.The Maharashtra State Mental Health Department is the apex statutory body in the state responsible for planning, regulating and supervising mental health services, ensuring effective implementation of mental health legislation and safeguarding the rights of persons suffering from mental illness. The committee is composed of experts, government officials and representatives from all walks of life.Dr. Chavan’s appointment is expected to bring his vast grassroots experience and expertise in mental healthcare to the policy-making process in the state.
