Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that he has approached the director to direct a biopic about the legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. According to the chief minister, discussions with Dar have begun with the aim of making a Hindi film that would introduce the legacy of the Assamese hero to the global audience.

Speaking on a Facebook Live conference on Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Dahl’s filmmaking abilities while explaining why he was chosen for the proposed joint venture. Talking about the filmmaker’s latest blockbuster, he said, “The film Durandhar was a huge hit. Aditya Dhar is the director and he is one of the most famous names of his generation. “Sarma added that the government hopes to showcase Lachit Borphukan’s extraordinary life through an ambitious film adaptation. “I think if our government can make a film about Ratchi Bolpkan, we can make his heroic deeds known across the globe. And, that will be a special achievement for us,” he said.The chief minister also said the initial dialogue with Dar was encouraging. He expects the director to visit Assam in August for more detailed discussions on the scale and creative direction of the film.Salma, meanwhile, clarified that the project will move forward regardless of whether or not Dahl ultimately directs. “If Aditya Dhar is not able to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The aim is to ensure a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan,” he said.The proposed film is part of the Assam government’s wider initiative to highlight the state’s rich historical heritage through cinema. In the 2026-27 budget presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.
The Legacy of Lachit Borphukan
Lachit Borphukan is revered as one of the greatest military leaders of Assam. He won lasting acclaim when he led the Ahom army to victory over the Mughals at the historic Battle of Sarai Ghat in 1671, halting Mughal expansion into the region. Despite battling serious illness during the campaign, his leadership and courage made him an enduring symbol of patriotism, and he is commemorated each year with Lachit Divas.As of now, Aditya Dhar is yet to officially announce his next directorial venture after the huge success of Durandhar: Revenge.
