The renewed attention on “3 Idiots” has reignited one of Bollywood’s longest-running debates: Who was the real inspiration behind the film’s iconic protagonist Rancho? Although many people over the years have associated the character with a famous education reformer, the filmmakers Rajkumar Hiraniproducer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and actors Aamir Khan They all came up with different explanations for the origin of Phunsukh Wangdu, making the mystery even more intriguing.
Aamir Khan refutes popular belief
The discussion resurfaced after Omi Vaidya, who plays Chatur in 3 Idiots, expressed support. Sonam Wangchuk During his ongoing hunger strike, he said: “I don’t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die.” His statement once again sparked speculation that the film’s protagonist is based on Wangchuk.However, Aamir Khan dismissed the hypothesis while speaking at an interaction at BFI Southbank in London. “When we were making 3 Idiots, neither Raju nor Abhijat, the writers of the film, nor I knew about Sonam.” Calling this idea a misunderstanding, Aamir clarified that the makers were not aware of Wangchuck’s existence while shooting the film.
Rajkumar Hirani traces Rancho’s roots to FTII
Director Rajkumar Hirani previously talked about Rancho’s origin in an interview with Komal Nahta. According to him, the philosophy behind the character came from his days at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).Recalling the experience, Hirani said, “I often thought, there are many interesting stories here that should be made into movies one day.” He then narrated the story of an FTII aspirant who reportedly joined the course as another student just because he wanted to learn filmmaking.Explaining why the incident continued to bother him, Hirani recalled students’ reactions after completing the course. “I never wanted to. I just wanted to learn filmmaking.” The belief that education is about learning, not credentials, became one of the foundations of Rancho’s character, and some real-life events ended up shaping the script, the filmmaker said.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra says Rancho reflects his own life
However, over the years, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has come up with a completely different story. During a session at the 2014 NFDC Film Bazaar, Chopra claimed that Rancho was largely inspired by his personal experiences. “The character Rancho is based on me. It’s inspired by my life.”He revealed that he rarely attended classes during FTII and even failed the final exam. Years later, after receiving an Oscar nomination for “Meet the Faces,” the Academy invited him back and honored him with a certificate of passing. Chopra also revealed that his family wanted him to become a doctor while he secretly pursued a career in filmmaking.Recalling the moment he finally confessed to his father, he said: “I thought he was going to congratulate me. But he looked at me and said, ‘You fooled me,’ and gave me a loving slap.”
Another inspiration behind Phunsukh Wangdu
After years of claiming that “Rancho” was based on his own life, Chopra added another dimension to the story. At the Ladakh Himalayan Film Festival 2021, he revealed that the character’s full name, Phunsukh Wangdu, was inspired by his former FTII classmate Phuntsok and affectionately called him “Phuntsok Ladakhi”.
A debate that never fades
“3 Idiots” was released in 2009 and was officially adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel “Five O’Clock Someone”. Since then, discussions surrounding Rancho’s real-life inspiration have continued for more than a decade.Aamir Khan has now reiterated that neither he nor the film’s writers knew Sonam Wangchuck during the making of the blockbuster, and while Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra have offered varying accounts over the years, the true inspiration behind one of Indian cinema’s most beloved characters remains to be explained.
