Indian captain Shubman Gill withdrew injured after suffering cramps in his right leg during India’s chase of 259 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday.Gill was batting on 80 off 75 balls when he experienced discomfort in the 26th over of the innings. After facing a full delivery from Josh Tongue that hit the outside edge, the India captain took off his gloves, crouched on the pitch and grabbed the back of his right leg before deciding to walk off the field.The injury came just after Gill and Shreyas Iyer put together a 100-run partnership to put India in control of the chase. Washington Sundar came in as the replacement batsman.England made an immediate comeback in the next over. Shreyas Iyer was run out after a mix of quick running and sharp fielding by Harry Brook.Washington Sundar pushed a delivery from Jofra Archer towards mid-on, prompting Iyer to depart for a run. While running at the striker’s end, Iyer changed his path to avoid being hit by the ball, costing him valuable time. Brook collected the ball cleanly and hit the stumps straight, catching Iyer just short of his crease.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket to help the hosts post 258 in the first ODI.England cruised to 61 without loss before India sparked a collapse that left them at 107 for 6 at 22. Root scored 76 from 76 balls, while Dawson made a career-high 68 from 83 deliveries as the pair rebuilt the innings and took England to a total of 258.
