Mercedes-Benz responds to YouTuber criticizing E20 for high fuel consumption

Mercedes-Benz India has come up with an explanation after a popular YouTuber claimed that his Mercedes GLC SUV had a significant reduction in fuel consumption after being refueled with E20 petrol. The automaker said that all its BS VI fuel types sold in India are compatible with E20 fuel and meet the prescribed standards. The controversy started when automaker Saurav Joshi shared a video claiming that his Mercedes-Benz SUV’s fuel economy has dropped from 17 kmpl to 5 kmpl in just two days. He said the car’s range dropped from 800 km on a full tank to about 480 km after switching to petrol E20. Expressing concerns about the fuel, he said ethanol-based fuel could affect engine reliability and said he was worried about using his gasoline-powered SUV.Soon after, Mercedes-Benz India issued a customer advisory, saying that customer safety, vehicle reliability and performance are top priorities. The company also explained that all Mercedes-Benz BS VI vehicles are compatible with E20 fuel and have been certified by the relevant authorities. It added that customers facing technical issues can contact the brand for assistance.E20 fuel, which contains 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent gasoline, has been at the center of much public debate in recent weeks. Although some car owners have reported that fuel shortages can be attributed to the use of hybrid fuel, the government still says that E20 is safe for use in vehicles and says that any drop in mileage is expected to be minimal, usually between 3-5 percent depending on the vehicle and its operating conditions.
