Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has reportedly approached the Kerala forest department to declare his possession of ivory products under the state government’s one-time amnesty scheme. The move is aimed at regulating wildlife items and ensuring the legal protection provided by the scheme, The Hindu reported. The amnesty program allows eligible individuals to declare previously unregistered wildlife items. Under the terms of the program, successful applicants may receive immunity from legal action.

Forest department records actor’s statement

Reports from the same website said that as part of this process, a senior official of the forest department recently visited Mohanlal’s residence in Kochi and conducted a survey under Section 41 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.During the investigation, the actor was reportedly asked about the source of the ivory items, when they were obtained and why they were not declared in advance. The investigation is part of the verification process before any decision is made on an application submitted under the amnesty scheme.

High Court cancels title certificate

The matter came into focus again after the decision of a division bench of the Kerala High Court in October 2025. The bench canceled the title certificate previously issued to Mohanlal. It also revoked a government order that allowed him to keep the ivory items.According to the High Court, the 2015 government notification was never published in the official gazette. Certificates of ownership and ownership licenses for ivory items have lost their legal validity.Even after the high court ruling, the forest department has not initiated criminal proceedings for the alleged illegal possession of wildlife items.
