S. Janaki was born on April 23, 1938 in Guntur district of present-day Andhra Pradesh. She has shown extraordinary musical talent since she was a child. She received professional music training and won a singing competition held by the All India Radio when she was 18 years old. She made her debut in Tamil with the song “Vidhiyin Vilayattu” but soon expanded to Telugu and many other languages. Interestingly, she sang in six languages within a year of her debut and has recorded more than 40,000 songs in 17 different languages to date.
