The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said it has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA against referee Francois Letexier following Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina. These included a goal disallowed after a VAR review and a penalty appeal that was not reviewed in the build-up to Argentina’s winning goal.According to the Spanish publication Diario AS, the president of the Egyptian Football Association Hany Abo Rida has submitted a formal complaint to FIFA against the French referee Francois Letexier and his office team.The report said the EFA has asked FIFA to investigate what it believes were controversial decisions during the match. He also asked that Letexier and his office team be removed from the rest of the tournament, claiming that they made crucial mistakes.After the match, Egypt’s coach Hassan also questioned several refereeing decisions and suggested that factors beyond game itself influenced the outcome.“We saw better than the reigning champion – better in everything – but the result was influenced by internal factors on the field and external factors off it,” said Hassan. “Maybe they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Maybe they wanted Messi to stay in the race,” he said in the post-match press conference.“In football, there are sometimes external factors that go beyond the technical aspect. The world champion received support at every level,” he added.Argentina completed the comeback from 2-0 down with 11 minutes of regulation time remaining to secure a 3-2 win and a place in the quarter-finals.Egypt had gone ahead through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. The African side also had another goal ruled out following a VAR review, a decision that proved significant as Argentina recovered to win the match.Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri.
