Most students spend several years preparing for medicine or engineering. Few dare to pursue both at the same time. And even fewer are able to excel in every aspect. But Nikhil Sadineni did just that – turning what many thought was an impossible academic journey into an inspiring success story.Nikhil first hit the headlines in 2017 when he secured All India Rank (AIR) 55 in NEET UG and got admission in MBBS at the prestigious AIIMS Delhi. While most medical students would focus entirely on becoming doctors, Nikhil saw something else coming. He believed that artificial intelligence would transform health care, so he decided to prepare for it rather than wait for the future to arrive.

While studying MBBS, he quietly enrolled in Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Medical school is often described as one of the most demanding academic programs in the country. However, while pursuing his Bachelor of Medicine in Internal Medicine at AIIMS, Delhi, Nikhil took on another challenge that surprised many.He pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science and Applications offered by IIT Madras while balancing two rigorous degree programs. His decision was driven by more than just curiosity. While studying medicine, he realized that artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science would soon become integral to disease diagnosis, medical imaging, patient care, and hospital systems. Rather than choosing between medicine and technology, he chose to master both. The hard work paid off. Nikhil graduated from IIT Madras with a CGPA of 9.82 and accumulated expertise in deep learning, large language models (LLM), reinforcement learning, big data, full stack development and data structures while completing his MBBS.

Next comes another milestone – AIR 1 in GATE Data Science & AI

For most students, completing the Bachelor of Internal Medicine will be the end of a long academic journey. For Nikhil, this is just the beginning of another. He secured all-India rank in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper in GATE 2025, one of the most competitive postgraduate entrance exams in India. This achievement opened doors for him to join another premier institution, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in artificial intelligence. His academic path is unusual because it bridges two disciplines that increasingly work together to shape the future. Rather than viewing medicine and engineering as separate worlds, Nikhil has built his career on their intersection.

Why medicine and artificial intelligence could be the next big career combination

Nikhil’s journey also reflects a larger shift taking place in health care.Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way disease is diagnosed, medical records are analyzed, and treatment decisions are supported. From AI-assisted radiology to predictive healthcare and medical coding, technology is becoming an integral part of modern medicine.Nikhil has experienced both worlds first-hand, having served as a junior resident at AIIMS Delhi before joining XpertDox, a US-based healthcare informatics company. There, he contributed to improving natural language processing (NLP) systems designed to make medical coding more accurate and efficient. He later served as the company’s director of medical informatics, applying his clinical knowledge and artificial intelligence expertise to solve real-world healthcare challenges.Today, Nikhil continues to demonstrate how interdisciplinary learning can open up entirely new career paths as he conducts advanced research in artificial intelligence at IISc Bangalore. His story carries an important message for students preparing for competitive exams. Success is not always about choosing one field over another. Sometimes, the key is to recognize the intersection of two disciplines and have the courage to pursue them both simultaneously. From getting AIR 55 in NEET, MBBS from AIIMS Delhi, BA in Data Science from IIT Madras, AIR 1 in GATE 2025, and now pursuing Masters in Artificial Intelligence from IISc Bangalore, Nikhil Sadineni’s journey shows that the future belongs to learners who are willing to transcend traditional boundaries.Disclaimer: This article is based on information shared publicly by Nikhil Sadineni through professional archives and public records.
