The long battle after the Rangoli attack
Rangoli Chandel was 21 when she suffered an acid attack. The incident left her severely injured and required multiple surgeries over several years.Recalling the painful time, Kangana wrote, “One of the most inspiring yoga stories about Rangoli is that Romeo on the roadside threw acid on Rangoli when she was not yet 21 years old. She suffered third degree burns, half of her face was burned, she lost vision in one eye, The ears melted and the breasts were severely damaged and she had to undergo 53 surgeries in 2-3 years but that’s not all, my biggest concern is her mental health because she has stopped talking and yes no matter what happens she has no words and just stares at everything. [sic],”The actress revealed that while doctors are focused on Rangoli’s physical recovery, her emotional well-being has become an equal concern for her family.
A family struggles with trauma
Kangana explained that the attack affected every aspect of Rangoli’s life. She recalled her sister becoming mute and struggling to react, despite receiving medical care and counseling.Sharing more details, she wrote, “She was engaged to an Air Force officer and when he saw her face after the acid attack, he left and never came back. Even then she didn’t shed a single tear or say a word. The doctors told me she was in shock and they treated her and put her on psychiatric medication but nothing helped. I was barely 19 at the time and I was with my teacher Surya Narayan. Doing yoga together, didn’t know it could help burn and trauma patients with retinal transplant recovery and vision loss,”The actress said she was still young at the time and looking for ways to help her sister recover.
How yoga became a turning point
According to Kangana, she started taking rangoli to yoga classes. Over time, she began to notice positive changes in her sister’s behavior and outlook.Describing the transformation, Kangana wrote: “I wanted her so badly to talk to me that I took her everywhere and even to yoga classes. She started practicing yoga and I saw a huge transformation in her. Not only did she start reacting to her pain and my lame jokes, but she also regained the sight in the one eye she had lost…Yoga is the answer to every problem (pain) you have, have you ever given it a chance?”
