Microsoft plans to challenge iPhone and Android smartphones with this new device
Microsoft Its Android-powered products haven’t had the success expected Surface Duo series Smartphone The company discontinued the product line after the Duo 2. But that doesn’t mean the company has stopped trying.
a new one Patent application Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on February 29 show that the company is developing another foldable or dual-screen mobile device. The patent application describes the company’s foldable smartphone concept using a single-hinge technology called a “spine cover.”
The next Microsoft smartphone may have a Galaxy Z Fold-like design
According to the patent application, the phone may have a book-style design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 10 and be equipped with a “flexible display.” However, the entire focus is on the spine cover mechanism, which is designed to protect the device’s single hinge system by covering the structural elements.
The difference between a regular hinge and Microsoft’s design is that the spine cover automatically adjusts when the phone is opened and closed to prevent any unnecessary gaps around the hinge, protecting it from dust and water. Currently, Samsung’s designs offer an IPX8 rating, which makes its foldable devices only water-resistant.
The patent further mentions that the new hinge mechanism could allow Microsoft to eliminate hinge creases that are less noticeable than existing options on the market.
Additionally, Microsoft has mentioned technologies that would allow them to bring the spine cover closer to the hinge of the device when folded, thus reducing the overall thickness of the foldable smartphone.
Microsoft states in the patent: “When the first display support frame and the second display support frame are rotated to a face-to-face orientation, by retracting the spine cover toward the central spine, the width of the folding computing device is reduced, thereby making the device easier and more comfortable to operate, such as with one hand.”
The idea is interesting, but practicality is still a question mark
The entire smartphone market is looking for a way to eliminate the foldable crease in smartphones. Some brands have adopted teardrop folding mechanisms to reduce creases, but nothing beats crease-free folding. Beyond that, the durability of foldable phones is also important, considering all the moving parts these phones have.
That said, adding another layer or removable parts on top of the entire foldable mechanism doesn’t seem like a smart move, despite the additional benefits and durability Microsoft explains in its patent filing.
