The knockout stage begins after the record group stage

The tournament’s expanded format has produced unprecedented numbers, with 48 teams competing in 72 group stage matches before 32 nations advance to the Round of 32. The group stage yielded a record 215 goals, while 999 players were in action. Africa achieved its strongest representation in the knockout phase with nine CAF nations advancing, while seven teams – including Canada, Cabo Verde, South Africa and DR Congo – reached the Round of 32 for the first time in history.

Sixteen rounds of 32 matches will be played this week, with matches spread across North America before the tournament moves to the Round of 16 at the weekend.
