From engineering student to OpenAI India CEO: Prabhjeet Singh’s inspiring career

Prabhjeet Singh has been announced as the new Managing Director of OpenAI India, after spending many years in consulting and leadership roles at one of the world’s largest mobile companies before being selected to lead OpenAI’s expansion in one of its most important markets. Singh studied at Delhi Public School RK Puram and then received a bachelor’s degree in electronics and communication engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He later earned an MBA in General Management from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad), graduating in the top 2% of his class. During his tenure at the College, he led the Consulting Club, served on the Student Affairs Council, and directed the Harvard College Asian Business Forum. He also received the Aditya Birla Scholarship, KVS Gold Award for Best All-rounder and Industry Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Performance. His corporate career began in 2005 as a senior analyst at Lehman Brothers in London. A year later, he joined McKinsey & Company and worked there for more than nine years, eventually becoming an associate partner. During this time, he advised more than 30 public and private sector organizations in financial services, telecommunications and consumer technology, while also working in the digital banking and payments space. In August 2015, Singh joined Uber Serve as strategy director. Over the next decade, he held various leadership positions, including General Manager, Delhi and North India, Director North India, East India, West India and Bangladesh, and Director, Cities and Growth. In June 2020, he became president of India and South Asia, leading Uber’s operations in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Under his leadership, India has become one of Uber’s fastest-growing and largest markets in the world. Singh was also named in the Economic Times 40 Under 40 list in 2019 and subsequently received the IIM Ahmedabad Young Alumni Achievement Award. Now OpenAI has appointed him as Managing Director, India, responsible for consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations. His appointment comes as OpenAI expands its presence in India, which CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly described as one of the company’s priority markets.
