Saif Ali Khan has spoken out about raising children with an inclusive religious outlook and revealed that discussions about faith are a regular part of family life. Saif was born into an interfaith family, his father is legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (popularly known as Tiger Pataudi) and his mother is veteran actor Sharmila Tagore. He later had two interfaith marriages of his own: first to Amrita Singh, with whom he had two children, and later to Kareena Kapoor, with whom he had sons Taimur Ali Khan and Jehangir Ali Khan.Speaking on We Women’s London edition, Saif said he enjoyed discussing religion with his children but admitted he was not religious.“That’s a conversation I like to have with them. Because I’m not the most religious person myself. My mother taught me, and I teach my children, that there is one God and He has many names. It’s that simple. You worship him in different places. If your religion talks about love and forgiveness for your fellow man, that’s it,” Saif said.

Memories of growing up with prayers from different religions

The actor also looked back on his childhood, saying he was exposed to different faiths while studying in a Christian school.“I grew up in church and school, in church from the beginning. I tried to cover it up by saying I was from a different religion, and then they had a Maulvi come and talk to us. But that didn’t work,” Saif recalled with a laugh.“But it was a completely Christian upbringing. Children would say prayers first and then prayers from other religions. They would celebrate Christmas like they celebrated Diwali. That’s how I was raised. I never really thought about it. It was gut feeling,” he added.

Saif Shares Taimur’s Thoughtful Answers About Religion

Saif also shared a recent conversation with his nine-year-old son Taimur Ali Khan that left a lasting impression on him.“I asked him, ‘What’s the difference between religion and methodology?'” Saif said.According to the actor, Taimur replied: “In religion, we pray, but in methodology, we don’t pray.” Calling it “a great answer,” Saif said, “So, we talk about these things all the time. I’m lucky that I didn’t grow up like that. My mother was open to those things and so is my wife. It’s more of a spiritual approach.”
